The discovery
By Leroy Miranda-Mejia
The Discovery is a movie on Netflix about how Thomas Harbor, a scientist, discovers that when you die, your consciousness goes somewhere and proves that there is an afterlife. This discovery leads a lot of people to take their own lives.
This movie dives deep into what would happen if the plot were to hypothetically happen. This movie is somewhat dark because during year 2 after “The Discovery” happened, over 4 million people had committed suicide. The movie follows Will Harber, who had actually sparked this idea after he drowned and was pronounced dead for a short while, telling his dad he saw “something.” Will meets Isla at a ferry, and they hit it off; both have a journey and fall in love. Near the end of the movie, Thomas makes a new device where you can record where you go. They tried it on someone who recently passed away, and it didn’t work.
But after they leave in frustration, Will goes back and reconnects with something; it then shows how the guy who passed is driving towards a hospital. He goes inside and confronts someone, but leaves. Will investigates the hospital, and most things shown in the video are gone. He thought it was a machine that records memory, but when he talks to Isla, they figure out that in the video, he has a wave tattoo on his right arm, but in person, he has a name tattooed on his arm instead.
They then get interrupted by Toby, saying how their dad hooked himself to the machine. They rush towards the room, and as soon as they are about to resurrect him, the screen turns on, and they see his dad working very hard. Then his wife wants him to join her for dinner, but he says, “Later.” As she is going upstairs, Thomas comes out and says, “Wait,” and they have dinner. Everyone in the room is stunned, especially Toby and Will.
When their dad comes back to life, they figure out that you basically go back to a memory/life of a decision you regret the most. They all decide to destroy the machine and not tell the public. As they have a meeting outside, Isla gets shot by a woman who got kicked out of the program. Will holds her as she passes away. He rushes towards the machine, connecting everything and hooking up the machine to himself, and he takes his own life with CO2. We get put on the ferry, where Will meets Isla for the first time and is confused. Apparently, this Isla is a part of him, and he discovers that he has been dead and was in a loop because the first time they met, he didn’t reunite with his dad. He heard on the news that a woman named Isla drowned, and he lived with that until he died. So he has been in hundreds of loops to save Isla. He did save her mentally and teleported near a beach, where he met a kid and helped him. Isla comes and grabs her son, and they walk away when he turns around, seeming to recognize her.

This movie got a 48% on the Tomatometer and a 43% on the Popcornmeter
Critics Review: Clarisse Loughrey said 2/5. The Discovery is a film that poses far too many questions, but has no heart to search for the answers. A.A. Dowd said, “Its central mystery keeps you guessing right up until a final turn that’s nearly as clever as it is convoluted.” Rated B.
My personal review of the movie is a 4/5 because I enjoyed how they told the story, and there were many jaw-dropping moments that had you questioning a lot of things. At the beginning of the film, the colors were dull and pale blue, and there was a dreamy vibe, but in the end, it was full of color because it showed how Will was finally able to rest and have no regrets. If you want a movie that has you on your toes and questioning what “If”-type questions, this is a great movie for you.
