The Mann Case – Current True Crime
By: Nitzaliah Festinger
Apparently, men these days are trying to kill their wives. But don’t worry. They’re not smart enough to get away with it.
This week, a retired chiropractor in Alabama was charged with attempted murder and received life imprisonment. And it seems the more this story unwinds, the crazier it gets.
In January of 2022. Hannah Mann was taken to the hospital due to her “abdominal pain.” When the doctors examined her, they found that Hannah Mann had been ingesting small amounts of lead. Somehow, with the help of the doctors and endless treatment, Hannah Mann survived. She had reported that her husband had been providing her with “daily supplements” for over a year. But, it turns out these pills had been laced with lead and were slowly destroying her body the entire time.
During the time Brian Mann was giving Hannah Mann these “vitamins”, he was also stealing her money. He had been withdrawing funds from her life insurance policy. His most recent offense was just days before Hannah Mann went to the hospital. Further investigation showed that Brian Mann had withdrawn around one million dollars in total.
When police were investigating the Mann case, Brian told them he had been subjected to lead poisoning as well. A nurse had done an X-ray and said that the minuscule piece of lead only appeared to have been in his system for a couple of hours. After further examination of Brian’s medical records, Alabama authorities concluded that Mann had ingested the lead to appear as a victim.
Leading up to Hannah’s hospitalization, Mr. and Mrs. Mann were going through a divorce. However, they had not been separated. Hannah Mann testified in court, claiming that when she initially experienced the symptoms of her disease, her husband would discourage her from going to the hospital. This led to her being further poisoned and ending up much more severely, since she only sought medical help after over a year of ingesting lead. She finally decided to go to the hospital because her mother had urged her to. Because Hannah Mann waited so long before seeking out treatment, she had to spend a significantly longer amount of time being treated. Had she gone in sooner, she wouldn’t have required such extensive treatment.
Back in 2022, when the case was initiated, Briann Mann was released on a $500,000 bond, but with the conclusion of the trial this past week, he has been sentenced to life in prison. Hannah Mann has expressed her grief to news officials, voicing how she felt sorry for her children, who wouldn’t be able to see their father again. She quotes, “You know, of course, you want justice to be served, but also you don’t want to see someone go away for a long, long time that you’ve known and cared about for so long.”
