This week we have a tragic story that needs to be heard. On December 4th, a woman who called the police when she was experiencing domestic violence and needed help. She thought the system could help and calm the situation down but instead she unfortunately ended up losing her life for something that should’ve never started in the first place. The situation occurred when Niani Finlayson called 911 because her former boyfriend was strangling her daughter. It was said that they were also dealing with there own domestic violence; she called the police in order to get things under control but instead the deputies stated that Niani Finlayson had made threats indicating that she was going to stab her boyfriend. They claimed that she walked up to him with the knife in her hand and that’s when the deputies shot her. This is not the truth. In the article, covered by CNN, it states that “Finlayson was sitting on the ground, not threatening anyone when deputies opened fire on her from behind a glass door shooting her in the back four times”. She did not have a knife and was not being a threat. Niani Finlayson’s family filed a case against the deputies who took part in this situation with the serious charges of accusing the deputies of wrongful death, assault, battery and civil rights violations. Ms. Niani’s daughter had to witness her mother being shot and killed right in front of her eyes.
Writer’s Commentary:
This story is very sad and went about very wrong. Police are supposed to serve and protect without taking anyone’s life if they were asking for help. This is heartbreaking to hear considering her daughter had to witness it all and because there are lies going on about this case. I feel so sorry for the families who have witnessed something like this. I hope this story brings awareness to domestic violence victims and victims of police brutality in the public eye.
Always remember that we never know what people go through behind closed doors.
