The Plante Case – Current True Crime
By: Nitzaliah Festinger
In 1994, Christina Marie Plante, a 13-year-old girl living in Arizona went missing. 32 years later, she reappeared. Finally, her story is ready to be told.
As it so turns out, Christina chose to go missing. During that time, her parents were having an intense custody battle, and she was unhappy about being forced to live with her father. So one day, Christina went to her horse’s stable, where she met up with her mother. Together they rebuilt Christina’s life. She ran away to live with her mother. It is unknown whether the pair fled the country for a time, or remained in the states, but they certainly left Arizona immediately to cross the state jurisdiction. Christina grew up and started living by a new name which remains undisclosed. There is no record of her enrolling in school the following years. She grew up to start a family and ironically, she also worked for a private investigator after earning her psychology degree. While it seems impossible for Christina to have attended university without obstructing her new identity, there is no information on the matter.
When asked about her running away, Christina says, “that was a long time ago, that was an old life,”. Authorities thought for many years that she had been abducted, and considered the case a criminal offense. There was an extremely extensive search all around the area. Eventually the case went cold.
Now that she has been located, Christina’s case has been officially resolved. While discussing the importance of revisiting cold cases, Angelline Hartman -director of communications at NCMEC- dedicates this case’s awaited closure to the progress of technology. “No matter how much time passes, even decades, we never give up. Every child deserves to be found, and every family deserves answers. Because of technology, we’re seeing more and more breakthroughs in cases once thought unsolvable. The safe recovery of Christina Plante is a reminder to our families still searching for their loved ones that hope endures, even after so many years.”, she says.
All in all, this case is important because it shows investigators that even the most hopeless seeming cases have a chance. It serves as a reminder that they can solve any case at hand, and can provide a strong motivational message.
