Trump is suing the BBC
By: Cecilia Fountain
Trump is pressing to sue the BBC, a news source, for $1 billion after allegedly creating a false narrative of Donald Trump’s speech on January 6th.
BBC News has been known to be mostly right-wing when it comes to politics. But this newest lawsuit shows a different point of view. The section of the news source that Trump is targeting is Panorama. A long-running group at the BBC that investigates more controversial topics. The group has investigated topics such as Princess Diana’s death, the Pandora Papers, and President Kennedy.
Allegedly, Trump’s lawyers say that Panorama took different sections of the documented speech of Trump on January 6th, 2021, and pieced them together to make it seem that he was in direct support of the violence that happened in the U.S. Capitol that day. This alleged action of piecing together the document although it is what trump actually said, It is pieced together to show a certain point of view. That’s what news companies do though. They take their sources and information and turn it into a story that is interesting for the public. This document makes Trump look like more of an antagonist of what unfolded that day. The document also links him more to the reasons for the events that occurred that day. They had till November 14 to retract the panorama document from their new organization and pay compensation or face the lawsuit.
In response, BBC Directors General and CEOs Tim Davie and Deborah Turness have stepped down from their positions and have not said anything further. They have also sent out multiple apologies from them to the white house. However, they refuse to pay compensation.
The real problem behind this is how the president is targeting news sources. For years, the news has shaped and molded journalism for the public’s view. It gives the everyday person insight into what is happening with the nation. The president is not just attacking news sources; he’s attacking the right of free speech. And although he can try and shape it as a way to prevent the spread of misinformation. That’s obviously not the real reason because if it were he would actually try to prevent it on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, which are the highest spreaders of misinformation. The reality is that Trump is trying to shape the narrative and hide all his misdeeds so he isn’t seen as a “bad person.” If he keeps up the act of the man of the people and the person who can “make America great again,” it will help him get away with his hidden agenda and help his billionaire friend. Trump being able to target and sue news sources is just the start of how he will close the door on the right to free speech.
