On January 1, 2025, around 3:15am a premeditated terror attack resulted in 14-15 deaths and at least 35 people injured. An electric Ford F-150 truck was driven into a new years celebration without any hesitation. The attacker was identified as a 42 year old military veteran, named Shamsud-Din Jabbar. This attacker acted alone and was killed by the police that same day in a police shootout. The victims of the attack were, Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux (18), Hubert Gauthreaux (21), Martin “Tiger” Bech (28), Reggie Hunter (37), Billy Dimaio (25), Nicole Perez (27), Terrence “Terry” Kennedy (63) and A British National Edward Pettifer (31), Kareem Badawi (18), Andrew “drew” Dauphin (26) Matthew Tendorio (25). Though there were many more, these are all the publicly identified victims, with some wishing to be kept private for a multitude of reasons.
This was a very horrific crime, none of those victims went out there thinking they were going to pass away in one of the most horrific ways, everyone just wanted to have fun.
Personal statement
I had met 2 men in Houston. Texas in March of 2026; they were from New Orleans and out of nowhere, I asked them if they knew about that horrific tragedy. They said they were right there when it happened, stating they had moved on the sidewalk not even 2 minutes before the tragedy happened. They had said they heard it turn around and saw brains on the floor, a heavily gruesome view. They said that Nikyra was just laying there on the ground and there was nothing no one could do because everyone was terrified. Everyone was stuck but so shook, some ran, some barely moved and some never moved again. He said when it was time to go they went and sat in the car, they did not even move the car. To this day, they think about what happened because they said before that the attack, it was one of the best days he’s ever had. When he said that I thought about the movie “Sinners”, “But before the sun went down, that was the best day of my life, was it like that for you?”.
