The Epstein debacle
By: Cecilia Fountain
More than 6 years after the death of Jeffery Epstein the talk about what unfolded on his island still alludes to the public. However, recently on November 12 the democratic house of oversight committee released over 20,000 paged documents that included emails calling out President Donald Trump’s involvement.
However, before I dive into specifics you need to know who Jeffrey Epstein is and what it means to release the emails. Jeffery Epstein was a very rich business man who bought an island. On this island Epstein trafficked underage girls who were kept in harsh conditions and were forced to be sex workers. Epstein also invited lots of business and political figures to this island, some aware of the trafficking, others not. The specifics of what actually happened on the island and who were involved is hidden behind the department of justice away in investigation files. But on July 6, 2019, Epstein was federally charged for sex trafficking of minors. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and while there, he was beaten to death by the inmates and killed. The only information that has been sent out about the incident is the victim’s statements who are brave enough to speak out against it, and around 10,000 other files that have been brought up in court cases. So the release of 20,000 files is quite a substantial jump.
In the emails Epstein called out Trump for spending hours at his house with a victim. Although the republican party claims that this is only democratic party “cherry picking” and trying to make Trump look like more of an offender than he actually is. But, this is the only information the public has so that’s the perception the public will take. Furthermore, this trapped Trump in a box. Because there is still a pressing audience for the release of all the files. It means that if Trump tries to continue to push that he is not a part of the files, it will make him look like more of a liar. (because of this new direct evidence- the 20,000 emails that include him- that links him to the debacle). However, if he releases the files, it could jeopardize his career more because it could include more information about him.
This question of what Trump will do next got answered by Trump recently- on November 19- signing for the release of the Jeffery Epstein files. Under this signature the Justice department has 30 days to release the files. The only problem of this is that there are several exceptions to what the public will actually see.
First, the Trump administration will prolong the release as long as possible, meaning they will use up all of the 30 days. So the earliest the public could see anything is December 19. And that’s if within those 30 days they don’t find a work around to prolong the release further.
Second, the release must abide by the law. Which means all information released has to protect the privacy of victims. House Speaker Mike Johnson reported to ABC that “We’re going to protect victims, and the law as written allows us to do that. You know, the law has carve outs to protect victims and to protect information surrounding victims, which is what we do, not only in this case, but in every case,”.
Third, the Department of Justice is able to withhold any information that is related to ongoing investigation. Meaning that all new, or old information that relates to an ongoing investigation will most likely not be released to the public.
All of this is a lot to process. And can be a lot to grasp. The question of what will actually be released is still up in the air, and all the average American citizen can do is wait. To see what unfolds next is a mystery, but hopefully it will give true justice to the victims who have been denied this information. And hopefully answer long debated questions on which public figures have been a part of a horrendous scandal.
